How pre-assignment day works
You can create groups and assign students now; anything you build stays a
draft and is promoted to active automatically on assignment day.
Students you place by hand keep their group — the automatic algorithm only places
unassigned students, and it backfills open seats in existing groups up to the
default size of 6. To keep a group smaller, set a size cap on its card below;
a group capped at its current size is locked and the algorithm will never add anyone to it.
To reserve a group for particular men (say, grad students only), set a placement lock from the
group's menu: the algorithm places only those men there, and places them there first.

This does two things in order:
Creates new groups from draft groups that have an accepted captain, filling each with up to 5 members matched by graduation year.
Backfills existing groups that have open spots with remaining unassigned students.
Students receive a push notification and email when they are placed. You can run this as many times as needed — it only places students where capacity exists.

How the variable ranking works
When groups form on assignment day, the algorithm first tries to place each man with men who share his #1 answer. If he can't be matched on it (he answered N/A, or no group with an open seat shares his answer), it tries #2, then #3. The same order picks accountability partners inside each group, and lower-ranked variables break ties between equally good matches.
What should be #1? Whichever variable best predicts that men already know each other on your campus. If club sports teams are tight communities here, rank Club sport first. If life is organized around dorms, households, or social clubs, rank Living location first.
Class year is special. It matches by closeness (a junior is a fine match for a senior), so it always finds someone. That makes it the natural last resort, and it means any variable ranked below it only ever breaks ties. Leaving Class year last, which is the default, is right for almost every campus.
Nothing changes until you click Save ranking. Once saved, the new order applies to every placement from then on: the next assignment day, the men who sign up after it, and future pairings. Nobody already in a group is moved.
